The Perth Mint - Australia
Australian Mints
There are two prominent mints in Australia. The Royal Australian Mint, tasked with producing all circulation coins within the country, and the Perth Mint, best known for their collectible investment-grade bullion series.
The Royal Australian Mint (RAM)
The Royal Australian Mint was opened by Prince Philip in 1965 with their first project being the creation of decimal currency. The primary purpose of the RAM is to produce Australia's legal-tender circulation coins; however, they also strike medals for military/civilian honors, tokens for commercial businesses, and they eve produced medals for the 2000 Summer Olympics alongside the Perth Mint.
The Perth Mint (PM)
The Perth Mint was first opened in June 1899 by the Royal Mint of London in response to a discovery of vast amounts of gold in Coolgardie and Kalgorrlie. However it was not the first Royal Mint branch to be opened in Australia; in fact, it was the third. From 1899-1931, the Perth Mint struck over 106 million gold sovereigns and close to 735,000 half sovereigns to be used throughout Australia and the British Empire. The mint remained under Britain's jurisdiction until July 1970 and is still going strong today as the oldest operating mint in the entire South Pacific.
Silver Kangaroo
A recognizable symbol of Australia, the kangaroo is featured in the Australian national emblem alongside the emu. Struck by The Perth Mint in .9999 pure investment-grade silver, each coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 with an unlimited mintage and, as a Perth Mint first in 2017, includes an authentication feature on the reverse. A micro-laser engraved letter ‘A’ (within the first A of AUSTRALIA) is only detectable under a magnifying glass is designed to make counterfeiting significantly more difficult providing peace of mind to collectors.
Silver Kookaburra
The Kookaburra Series, yet another series produced by the Perth Mint, is widely popular around the world. Production of the Silver Kookaburra began in 1990 and still continues providing a new design each year. This continuous annual change in design and .999 fine silver quality makes the Kookaburra series perfect for collectors and investors alike. Each piece has a designated face-value that can be found reflected on the obverse side of the coin and size can range anywhere from 1 troy ounce (ozt) up to 1 kilo.
